Carnival is on now 2/01/2009 - 3/31/2009 Limassol, Cyprus
Carnival is celebrated in towns all over Cyprus, but especially in the city of Limassol (Lemesos). A week or so of frolicsome fun kicks off with the arrival of the King and Queen who travel on an illuminated float accompanied by serenading singers, orchestras and marching bands. The opening parade is followed on successive days by exhibitions, children's carnival, serenade evenings, choir concerts and carnival dance parties. The climax comes on the Sunday with the big parade. A colourful procession makes its way through the streets with giant papier-mâché figures on floats, dancers in humorous and bizarre costumes and a great deal of music and general clamour. The day ends with prizes awarded for the best fancy dress and a carnival farewell party in the evening.
